A good interim manager:
- Is not a temp or a contractor requiring your supervision
- Is an adaptable, natural problem solver
- Within hours, has you feeling they started yesterday, if not days ago
- Has a skill set that sees them across industry/enterprise sector boundaries
- Has held senior roles requiring strict confidentiality
- Achieves best results when pitched as somewhat over-qualified
- Blends in, relating well to all levels of staff. Is credible in cross-functional situations
- Can bring fresh perspectives from a variety of backgrounds
- Leaves you to get on with your job
- Can both think strategically and wrestle with operational detail
- Is not "filling-in" until a permanent job draws them away
- Will benefit current staff by exposure to different experiences & skills
- Can tactfully challenge conventions as a naïve outsider
- Focuses on business needs, not clouded by internal politics or career concerns
- Doesn't pretend to know it all. Enjoys interim work as continuing personal development
- Is free of prescriptive consulting house methodologies & revenue targets
- Charges by the hour/day through a limited company, avoiding employee commitment issues
- Stands comparison to the full cost of an employee when divided by available working hours
(include benefits, pension, recruitment costs etc. Allow for holidays, courses etc)
- Lives off a building reputation for delivering defined objectives
- Will decline your assignment if they think they can't contribute rapidly
At least, that's the approach & motivation of any Interim Manager Start Yesterday provides
